How to Stain Concrete With a Deer Stencil

Decorate a plain concrete slab with concrete stains, which are special paints specifically made for concrete. Staining with concrete stain will ensure that your design does not flake away due to inclement weather or from being walked on regularly. Using stencils on concrete can be a little tricky, because the surface of the concrete is often rough and slightly uneven, and stain may bleed underneath the stencil, causing distortion. You can overcome this issue with proper planning and preparation.

Things You'll Need

  • Deer stencil
  • Contact paper
  • Broom
  • Mop
  • Concrete stain
  • Paint roller
  • Stencil brush

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the deer stencil onto a piece of contact paper and cut out the deer shape to create a contact paper stencil. This stencil is applied directly to the concrete and will stay securely in place while the stain dries.

    • 2

Clean the concrete thoroughly by sweeping and mopping to remove any dirt or debris from the surface before you begin painting. Let the concrete dry completely before you apply the stencil.

    • 3

Paint two coats of concrete stain to the entire concrete surface using a paint roller. Let each coat dry completely before you continue.

    • 4

Remove the backing from the contact paper and press the stencil onto the dry concrete. Smooth down the edges of the stencil around the deer shape to make sure the contact paper is firmly adhered to the concrete.

    • 5

Dip a stencil brush into a different shade of concrete stain. Apply the stain to the stencil by tapping the brush straight down all along inside edge of the deer stencil. This will help prevent the stain from bleeding underneath the contact paper and distorting the finished deer shape. Fill in the inside of the stencil with stain and let it dry overnight.

    • 6

Carefully peel away the contact paper from the concrete to reveal the stained deer.
