How to Use Writing on the Wall Decor

Artistic homeowners often enjoy decorating their homes with original or exotic items and techniques. One such technique involves attaching vinyl letters to your walls instead of hanging pictures or posters, a practice often called writing on the wall art. Some advantages include low-maintenance art and no holes in the wall from hanging frames. This art also comes in a variety of fonts, and includes some pre-made messages as well as a full array of upper and lowercase letters with which you can create your own messages. Using this art properly can add whimsy and distinctiveness to your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where to put your writing on the wall lettering. Popular places include above beds, mantles and as decoration in short, empty hallways. Visualize the letters at eye-level on your walls to figure out how they would look in different places.

    • 2

Clean your chosen spot with a mild cleanser. Spray some cleanser on the area and wipe it clean with a soft cloth. This removes any dirt and grime that might prevent the vinyl lettering from sticking. Allow the spot to dry for about an hour before applying your letters.

    • 3

Place the letters on the wall, and arrange them the way you want them. Attach them to the wall with a little painter's tape and use a small level to ensure they are straight. Using the level, draw guidelines onto the wall above the letters.

    • 4

Remove the letters from the wall and remove the protective backing. It should peel away easily at the corners. This will leave the vinyl letters attached to a transfer page. Tape the transfer page, right-side out, back onto the wall in line with your guidelines.

    • 5

Press the edge of a credit card against the upper left corner of each letter and push in and down slowly and firmly. This transfers the vinyl to the wall. Remove the painter's tape from the transfer page and peel the page slowly away from the letters on the wall in a horizontal motion.
