Clean the tiles to produce a spotless surface for painting and decorating. Remove all traces of foot particles and grease that may have splashed onto the tiles in the past. Use a dual-action cleaner and a soft, scratch resistant scrubbing sponge and water. Apply the cleaner, scrub and rinse away the cleaner and food particles with water.
Choose which tiles you want to change the color of or paint images on. Put painter’s tape around each of the chosen tiles or sections of tiles to prevent painting the edges of surrounding tiles.
Apply a latex tile primer with a high-density foam paint roller. Dip the roller in the primer and roll it onto the tiles and sections of tiles. Allow this primer coat to dry overnight. Clean the roller thoroughly in running water and lay it aside to dry so it can be reused.
Use melamine paints to color your tiles, as this type of paint is ideal for enameled surfaces like tile. To apply the paint, dip the roller in paint and roll the paint onto the tiles.
Hand-paint images onto the tiles for a more unique look in your kitchen. Choose an element from your kitchen décor theme and paint the image onto only a few tiles or bordering tiles. Use acrylic paint and artist’s paintbrushes to apply these images. If you do not have much artistic ability, you may want to consider hiring an artist or using stencils for images like apples, chickens or other common kitchen themes.
