How to Stencil Using a Roller

Tape off the edges of walls with painter's tape to ensure paint does not get on any molding, the ceiling or the floor. Spread out a painter's canvas to protect flooring.

Pour a generous amount of stirred paint in a color that contrasts your walls in a paint tray, and dip the roller in it, rolling to absorb an even amount of paint.

Affix stencils to your wall in the desired pattern by spraying the backs with stencil adhesive spray and sticking them on the wall. Smooth and press down with your hands until the stencils are firmly applied to the wall.

Roll the paint-covered roller over your stencil, starting in the center of the stencil's design and working outward to fill in the stencil with paint. Repeat on all stencils. Achieve a wallpaper-like design all over your wall by painting the entire wall. The stencils, once removed, will reveal a design in the wall's original color.

Remove the stencils after completing painting, but before the paint has dried, to avoid paint peeling with the stencil as it is removed. Remove all painter's tape before the paint dries.
