How to Reink a Stamp Pad

With the resurgence of crafters working with scrapbooking, card making and textile design as well as businesses using the convenience of self-inking stamps in their correspondence, refilling depleted stamp pads is a useful technique to learn. Re-inking is more economical than replacing and far more environmentally responsible than adding waste to already overburdened landfill sites. Re-inking may be performed with self inking stamps and simple foam or felt stamp pads, using refills in a wide range of ink formulations.

Instructions

  1. Refilling Inkwells In Self-inking Stamps

    • 1

Follow the directions on how to open your self-inking stamp. Some involve the simple vertical removal of a cap, while others require you to push a button to a lock line and lock the stamp in place before pulling out the ink well located in a drawer at the front of the stamp.

    • 2

Select the desired color and remove the cap from the bottle of replacement ink. Hold the ink bottle over the ink tube in the stamp. Gently squeeze approximately six drops of ink into the tube.

    • 3

Place the cap back on the ink bottle. Replace the cover on your stamp or insert the ink well back into the front mount and stamp down to unlock the stamper. Allow the ink to soak in for two to three hours before using the stamp.

Re-inking Foam or Felt Stamp Pads

    • 4
Regular stamp pads can be replenished easily with roll-on or smoothed-on ink.

Open your stamp pad. Choose the correct replacement color and remove the cap from the bottle or roll-on applicator.

    • 5

Drop a few drops of ink on the pad, and allow it to seep in. If you have a roll-on applicator, roll the ink onto the pad in a zigzag pattern. Do not oversaturate the pad. Allow 15 minutes of soak in time before using the stamp pad.

    • 6

Apply thicker inks, such as mica-based formulations, onto the stamp pad using a loose wave design. Smooth the ink around the pad using your tongue depressor held at an angle as if you were icing a cake. Continue to apply light pressure until no solids remain on the surface of the pad. Your pad is ready for use.
