Instructions

Create the overall design of the wall with a large piece of paper and pencil prior to painting the wall. Go through magazines, the Internet and various other sources of inspiration to get an idea of what you would like your theme wall to look like. If you are doing a theme wall for a kid's room, you can look through children's story books to get an idea of style and design.

Prepare the wall with primer, use sand paper if necessary to take smooth down any rough areas. Choose the background color and paint the wall using smooth upward and downward strokes.

Use stencils to create the desired design. Apply a small amount of spray mount to the back side of the stencil, place the stencil on the wall. Load a stencil brush with paint. Dab or pounce the brush on a paper towel to remove most of the paint. Use the stencil brush to dab paint into the stencil holes. Leave the paint to dry and then carefully remove the stencil from the wall.

Create freehand designs by using a pencil to draw the designs on the wall. Carefully paint the inside of picture you have just created. Use a stiff paint brush and dab the paint on carefully. If you want a different effect, you can use a clean square sponge and dab the paint on with it. Sponges also work well for painting sky designs. For this use a light blue paint for the background and white paint for the clouds. Dab the paint on gently, as you don't need to use a lot of paint. Use only a moderate amount of paint on the brush, and remember to dab off any excess paint.
