How to Stencil With Spackling Paste

Spackle, or joint compound, works well for stenciling designs because it is easy to apply and washes away with water. If you don't like the design you've made, wipe it off and try again. Ready-mixed joint compound takes a long time to dry --- up to 24 hours --- which gives beginners plenty of time to perfect a project. Setting-type joint compound has various drying times, depending on brand and type. The fastest drying time is 5 minutes, making it convenient for projects with tight deadlines. Both types of joint compound sand easily, which allows you to smooth and shape your creations.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a stencil shape by cutting a design out of thick cardboard with scissors or a utility knife, or buy a stencil from a craft store.

    • 2

Mix the spackle according to the manufacturer's directions. Typically, ready-mixed joint compound only requires gentle stirring, but setting-type joint compound requires you to add clean water to the powder to achieve the proper consistency.

    • 3

Hold the stencil flat against the surface you are stenciling.

    • 4

Use a drywall knife to apply a smooth, even layer of joint compound across the stencil. Choose a knife that is wider than the stenciled design to minimize lines from wiping. For example, if the stenciled shape is 5 inches wide, use a 6-inch drywall knife.

    • 5

Peel the stencil away. Move slowly and carefully to avoid smudging the design.

    • 6

Allow the compound to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 7

Sand the design gently with 150-grit sandpaper if there are any surface flaws or lines.
