How to Decorate a Teenage Boy's Bedroom Using Wall Stencils

Decorating a teenage boy's bedroom can be a challenge. A teen's likes and dislikes seem to change as often as his mood, which makes stencils an ideal design choice. Painted stencils can be large, graphic art pieces adorning a wall or small objects bordering the ceiling and, should the teen tire of the art, they can easily be painted over.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the wall surface. Clean the walls with a damp cloth and conceal marks and imperfections with wall putty.

    • 2

Paint the area to be stenciled or the entire wall. This step is negotiable. If the walls were smooth and didn't require wall putty, move on to the stenciling. However, if you had to fill in imperfections and use a lot of wall putty, another coat of wall paint is in order.

    • 3

Identify where to stencil. Stencils aren't limited to wall borders; use the stencil as wall art or to frame a window or the headboard.

    • 4

Use the painter's tape to adhere your stencil to the wall. Using your ruler, determine that the stencil is level. Also determine that the stencil works well with the other decor in the room.

    • 5

Prepare to paint. Put a small amount of paint on your paint holder. A thick paper plate or plastic produce tray is a useful vessel for holding paint.

    • 6

Paint. Dip your stencil brush into the paint and fill in the stencil with soft dabs.

    • 7

Remove the stencil slowly and carefully. If any paint has bled from the stenciled area onto the wall, remove it with a damp cloth.

    • 8

Repeat the stenciling process, if necessary.
