How to Make a Braided Nylon Rug

The braided rug has a very rich history dating back to early American times. Thought to have been an inherited craft of the Native American's, some will debate that braided rugs took their roots from English settlers in the New World. Known for their durability, braided rugs are very much sought after. Originally created from fabric scraps and rags, the braided rug has evolved into several other categories of construction. Nylon braided rugs are in top demand in today's markets for their easy cleaning and great array of color choices. The art of creating a braided rug has not changed much since it's early introduction, except for the fact that some are factory made. You can carry on the tradition of braided rug crafting, without the need for heavy equipment, and take pride in the fact that you made it yourself. As a matter of fact, the steps to create a braided nylon rug by hand are quite simple!

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the color of nylon rug yarn that you would like to use to create your braided rug. Traditionally, a mixture of colors were used to create a rug, but feel free to use any color combination that you choose.

    • 2

Take the three rolls of yarn, and hold an end strand from each roll. Tie all three together in a knot.

    • 3

Unravel the nylon yarn from the roll as needed to create a braid. You will want to begin making a braid just as you would make in your hair.

    • 4

Continue braiding the yarn until the desired length is achieved. The longer the braid you create, the bigger your rug will be.

    • 5

When you are finished with your braiding, cut each of the three strands from their rolls, with your scissors, and tie them together in a knot.

    • 6

Form the rug by coiling the braided strand on a flat surface. Starting in the center and working outward. Continue coiling until all of the braid is encircling the center.

    • 7

Sew the pieces of braid together to keep the coiled shape. This should be done in careful sections for maximum durability.

    • 8

Display your braided rug proudly in whatever area of your home that you wish.
