How to Make a Bear Rug

A bear skin rug is a classic piece of decoration that can emote many different feelings among people. Some find it to be kitschy and fun, while others see it as classy addition to any room with a fireplace. Whatever your reasoning, acquiring a bear rug is not as simple as stopping at your local rug store.

Instructions

    • 1

Get the bear skin. Not everyone who wants a bear rug is a big game hunter. If you are, the responsibility falls on your shoulders to shoot a bear. For others, you will have to find an outlet to acquire the skin. Contact hunting guides and ask if anyone has recently bagged a bear and doesn’t want the skin.

    • 2

Know that the skin needs to be properly tanned before turning it into a rug. Tanning is a process that ages the skin and removes all moisture and unwanted particles from the skin. Make sure you have properly done this in order to make a functional rug.

    • 3

Order taxidermy supplies depending on how much ornamentation you want to make. Some people wish to order fake eyes, teeth, claws and skull, while some prefer a flat rug.

    • 4

Measure a base for your rug. This will be a direct outline of your skin, but out of a material suitable for the bottom side of rugs. Make this pattern two inches larger than the bear in order to accommodate for the size and for taking it in during sewing.

Apply the bottom of the rug as well as all the other decorations you wish. This includes the eyes, teeth, claws and skull which can all be glued into place.
