Purchase two 1x2 pieces of wood that measure 3-1/2 feet long. These pieces will be used to create the loom frame. Most home improvement stores carry pieces of wood this size or you can ask to have the pieces cut to fit the dimensions. You will also need four wooden dowels. Two dowels will be attached to the top of the loom and two at the bottom. Additional dowels may be used in the middle depending on the tightness of the rugs you want to weave. For loose weaving, use four dowels. For tighter weaving, use six dowels.
Use 400 grit sandpaper to smooth any rough edges on the wood or the dowels. Use a light stain if you want to add color to the loom. Follow the directions on the stain to learn how to apply it properly. Allow the stain to dry for at least one day before putting the loom together.
To attach dowels to the frame pieces, measure six inches from the top of the wood using a tape measure. Mark with a pencil so you will know where to drill. Depending on the width of the dowels, you will need to create a hole that's large enough for the dowel to fit. The dowel should be snug--not too tight, but not too loose. Use a drill with a bit attachment to create the hole.
Place one end of the dowel into the hole to see if it fits correctly. Measure six inches from the dowel to create a hole for the second dowel. After fitting the second dowel, turn the piece of wood so you can add two dowels to the bottom of the loom.
Drill four holes on the other piece of wood using the same measurements.
To secure dowels in place, place a small amount of wood glue in the holes. Insert dowels into both pieces of wood and allow them to dry for at least one day before using the loom.
