Instructions

    • 1

Obtain an old Persian or Oriental rug. These rugs can often be found at garage sales and flea markets, especially if they're not in perfect condition. You won't be using the entire rug so, if there are stains, wear marks or frayed spots, this is not a big deal. It will only make the rug more affordable.

Choose a purse pattern. You can find these on the Internet, in books or draw your own. Pin the purse pattern to your rug at the spot that you want to use for your purse, avoiding any damaged parts of the rug.

    • 3

Cut out the rug pieces using a heavy duty scissors, being mindful of the fact that there will be some fraying. Leave a border around your pattern so that you can allow for this. Set up your sewing machine with heavy duty upholstery thread, making sure you are using a machine that can handle sewing through the thick rug material.

Stitch the purse pieces together using any seam you wish but make sure it is a sturdy one. Stitch with the wrong side facing outward; it will be flipped when finished. Stitch in the purchased zipper at the top of the rug purse, reverse side facing you. Invert the purse and you will have a nearly completed project.

Attach the handles to your purse. Depending on the type of purse handles you have purchased, this may require stitching them on, or adding strips of material to hook the handles into. Carry your new rug purse proudly.
