How to Make a Football Field Rug

Make this easy football-field rug to accent your child's sports-inspired room. It's simple to make when you use a store-bought throw rug. Or, if you are creating your football-field rug with a scrap of indoor/outdoor carpeting, you just hot glue a fabric binding over the edges for a finished look. Fold a perfect paper football, and watch your kids enjoy hours of non-electronic play and healthy competition. When your kids are finished with play, simply roll it up and put it in a closet, or leave it out as part of the room decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by taping off the sidelines of the football-field rug. Center a 36-inch x 60-inch rectangle. Position another strip of tape a 1/4 inch from the first on the outer edge.

    • 2

Mix the white acrylic paint with the fabric medium on a paper plate. This is to give the paint a soft texture. Usually, the mixture is half paint and half fabric medium. Read the manufacturers directions for your particular brand of fabric medium.

    • 3

Using the stencil brush, pounce the white paint between the taped strips, and allow it to dry. Peel off the tape.

    • 4

Find the 30-inch center along each long edge of the football field. Tape two strips of masking tape across the field, 1/8 inch on each side of this 30-inch measurement. This will ensure a centered 1/4-inch line.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 at these measurements: 5 inches, 10 inches, 15 inches, 20 inches, 25 inches, 35 inches, 40 inches, 45 inches and 50 inches.

    • 6

Stencil the white acrylic paint between the 1/4-inch taped strips. Allow it to dry. Peel off the tape.

    • 7

Starting at the 10-inch mark and 5 inches from the sideline, stencil a "1" and a "0" on either side of the 10 yard line. Position the numbers to be read from the bleachers. Turn the stencil around and repeat the stencil on the other side of the field. Again, position the numbers to be read from the bleachers.

    • 8

Repeat the "1" and "0" stencil on the other end of the field for the other 10 yard line.

    • 9

Stencil the 20, 30 and 40 yard lines on both ends and sidelines of the football field rug, and stencil the 50 yard line on each sideline of the field. Allow it to dry.

    • 10

Half way between each 10 yard line, run parallel strips of tape, as before, across the field to mark every five yards. Stencil between the lines. Do not stencil numbers on these, and do not run a stripe through the end zones. Allow the paint to dry, and peel the tape away.

    • 11

Using 3-inch letter stencils, center and stencil the word "TOUCHDOWN" in the end zone space, using capital letters. Allow it to dry.
