What Is Sisal Rug?

A sisal rug is a rug made from the fibers of the sisal plant's long leaves. The sisal plant, which belongs to the agave family, traditionally grows in Central and South America, and is also cultivated in the southern United States, Africa and parts of Asia. Sisal rugs are among the many traditional products of the sisal plant.
  1. Production

    • Sisal rugs are made by weaving sisal fibers together to make a strong and durable rug. These rugs are all-natural. No chemicals or pesticides are used in their production.

    Sustainability

    • Sisal rugs are an environmentally friendly product created from a renewable resource. The fibers are extracted from the leaves, a part of the plant that regrows. What's more, the sisal plant lives for about 10 years, making it easy to plant more sisal plants to renew its availability and continue production.

    Function and Design

    • Sisal rugs add an exotic touch to a room's decor. These rugs require minimal maintenance and are high-quality, low-priced, stylish home accents. They come in a variety of weaves, styles and designs. Some rugs are even bordered with a coordinating trim, which adds to the style and provides a dramatic touch to this natural floor covering.

    Maintenance

    • Keep water and moisture away from your sisal rug. Mold or mildew may form on your rug, and this natural rug may deteriorate over time from prolonged exposure to water.

    Prevalence

    • As a natural product, sisal fibers are second only to cotton in worldwide production. Sisal is commonly used to make twine and thicker ropes, as well as furniture, footwear, paper and other useful products.

    Fun Fact

    • Sisal gets its name from the Sisal port in the Yucatan, even though sisal does not grow in the Yucatan. The scientific name of the sisal plant is Agave sisalana.
