How to Determine the Size of a Rug for a Room

Sizing up a rug for any room might seem like a simple task at first, but there is a lot ot consider. First of all, which pieces of furniture are going to be on the rug, as opposed to on the floor? Will there be a hutch or dining table on the rug, and how many rugs do you plan on using? This guide will help sort things out for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the total area of the room from one wall to another, length and width using a tape measure. Write the measurements down. Exclude entryways and any other smaller nooks off of the main room.

    • 2

Get an idea of what size rugs are out there. Generally, you will find they range in size from small (4'x8') to longer (10'x20') rugs. You are going to find them in all sizes, but in case you can't find one large enough to fit the whole room, it's a good idea to see what you have to choose from.

    • 3

Measure in between the major pieces of furniture in the room, for instance, from the end of a large cabinet or wall table. Take note of the size of the square in between these pieces of furniture. You want your rug to fill this space with about a foot or so of border along the edges.

    • 4

Draw this area of space on graph paper, using the scale of one square per half foot. Then, break this measurement into two halves, one larger than the other. When sizing two rugs, it helps to always make one larger than the other one for balance.

    • 5

Count the squares for each side to come up with possible measurements for a double-rug layout, and one for a single-rug layout. You now have two choices: either buy one rug, or buy two smaller rugs to fill the space. With more options you are bound to find the perfect rug for your room.
