How to Stop an Area Rug From Slipping on the Carpet

While a rug may be the element that pulls your entire room together, it can be rendered a little less effective if it is constantly bunching up and sliding. In addition to being unaesthetic, it is also a safety hazard as it is easily tripped over. The following methods will assist you in securing your rug to your floor.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper
  • Double-sided tape
  • Velcro tape
  • Rug pad

Instructions

  1. Double-Sided Tape

    • 1

Begin by measuring your rug with your tape measure; measure both the length and the width, and record these measurements on paper for reference.

    • 2

Measure 3 inches in from the perimeter of your rug, and apply strips of tape along the entire length of the width and the width.

    • 3

Once you have applied the tape, press the rug down against the floor so that it is firmly adhered.

    Velcro tape

    • 4

Apply the scratchy side of the tape to your floor, sticky side down. This should, again, be measured at 3 inches in from where the edge of the rug will be.

    • 5

Apply the soft side of the Velcro on the rug, 3 inches in from the edge.

    • 6

Position the rug over the tape on the floor so that the two sides of the Velcro are directly opposite each other. Press down on the rug so that the Velcro bonds.

    Use of a Rug Pad

    • 7

Using the measurements that you have obtained from your rug, select a rug pad that is 3 inches smaller than the dimensions of your rug (on all edges).

    • 8

Lay the rug pad on the floor in the area that you will place your rug, smoothing it flat.

    • 9

Position the rug over the rug pad, allowing the 3 inches of clearance around all sides. Lay the rug flat and pull to straighten.
