How to Decorate with Flokati Rugs

Flokati rugs originate in Greece, where manufacturers make them from the wool of the floccati goat. According to Karla J. Nielsen in "Interior Textiles: Fabrics, Applications, and Historical Styles," the pile is about 3 to 5 inches high. The more luxurious rugs have higher piles. This creates a comfortable surface that does not have to be reserved for floors only. Let your comfort, imagination and the design of your home be your guide when you decorate with Flokati rugs.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a Flokati rug on the bare floor or on top of the carpet in any room in your home for a softer surface. You can enhance the décor further by using a rug in a complementary color. The natural off-white color may be popular but retailers also sell dyed versions in a variety of colors. The rugs are also available in various sizes and shapes to suit the configuration of your furniture and the available space in the room.

Use a Flokati rug as a bedcover. The high wool pile provides a soft and warm texture that is ideal for winter months. A Flokati rug that is 1200 grams or 1400 grams is lighter and may be best as a bedcover.

    • 3

Hang a Flokati rug on the wall. The rugs are available in various colorful designs. Area rugs are ideal sizes for the walls in many homes but if you have a large wall that requires a striking piece, then a floor-size rug may be best.

Drape a Flokati rug on a sofa, lounge chaise or armchair for additional comfort. It is possible to have your chairs reupholstered with a Flokati rug. You may also accentuate the effect with throw pillows made from a second rug in a matching or complimentary color.
