How to Properly Trim an Area Rug Underlay

Rug underlayments prevent area rugs from slipping and bunching as you walk on them or vacuum them. They are usually sold in a few standard sizes. Choose one in a size that most closely matches the dimensions of your area rug. Trimming it to the correct size is a quick project.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your area rug. Subtract 2 inches from both the length and the width.

    • 2

Lay the underlayment out flat on the floor.

    • 3

Measure out and mark on the underlayment the dimensions calculated from Step 1. The subtraction of 2 inches from each original measurement will make the underlayment slightly smaller than the area rug.

    • 4

Cut the underlayment to the size marked in Step 3.

    • 5

If the underlayment has an adhesive side, remove the protective paper and affix the underlayment to the bottom of the rug.
