How to Apply Carpet Tape

If you have a large area rug that's often abused by kids or is in a busy walkway, carpet tape can keep it in place. Carpet tape can also be used if you want to create your own rug design and are binding two or more sections of carpet. Carpet tape can effectively join multiple sections of carpet into one, but it may not prevent the joined sections from coming apart over time.

Instructions

Understand the term "carpet tape." Carpet tape describes tape used to hold and secure carpet and area rugs so they don't move, tape used to bind loose edges on carpets and carpet fragments, as well as tape used to connect two pieces of carpet into a single section.

Keep rugs in place using double-sided carpet tape. It's sold in rolls. Locate the small tab used to identify the start of the tape strip. With the rug in place, pull the tab from the edge of the tape strip and pull enough carpet tape to complete the task.

Pull an edge of the carpet back and press the tape on the backing. Press the carpet back down and smooth it with your hand, rubbing the top side of the carpet vigorously. The adhesive will bond with the backing on the carpet and the floor surface.

Use carpet tape on a large area rug. Affix the tape to the underside of the carpet. Fold the small lip over the front side of the carpet and press down to create a strong bond.

Join one or more smaller sections of carpet to create a larger section. Measure where the smaller sections will connect and press together to eliminate any spacing between the two. Place the one-sided tape on the line where the two sections meet. Tape the line where the carpets are joined and press firmly to secure the bond. This option is best for smaller sections of carpet that can be turned upside down, taped together and then turned over so the joined pieces can be set in place.
