How to Keep Throw Rugs on the Carpet From Slipping

Colorful throw rugs are a thrifty solution for boring carpets and a soft solution for hard floors like linoleum or wood. As anyone with an active home life knows, those throw rugs often act like giant, furry banana peels for unwary guests, playing children and vacuum-wielding homeowners. Slipping and sliding might be an enjoyable past time in outside water parks, but not in your hallway. Keep throw rugs from slipping with just a few household supplies.

Apply hot glue to the back of small area rugs used on carpet. Insert a glue stick into your hot glue gun, and wait for it to heat. Slowly form "s" shapes with the glue on the back of small area rugs like those you have near your kitchen sink or by your entry way. Conserve glue by starting with the corners first and moving to the edges. If you need more of a grip, add more "s" shapes to the center of the rug. Wait for the glue to dry completely before placing it on the floor. The glue forms a textured surface that grips especially well to carpet.

Apply bathroom caulking to the back of larger rugs. For larger throw rugs like those by your bed or vanity, bathroom caulking offers a robust solution. Cut the nozzle of the caulking tube toward the base to allow for a wider opening. Be careful, though. Too close to the bottom, and it can get messy. Hold the tube at a 45-degree angle, and slowly squeeze the caulking out in long, thick rows across the back of your rug. Wait for the caulking to dry completely before walking on the rug.

Use rug pads for larger rugs like runners and area rugs. Place the rug pads underneath your rugs--no need for adhesives. The padding helps keep your rugs plush and helps them last longer.

Use rug gripping tape (available at your local rug store) for smaller rugs on hard our outdoor surfaces. Measure the perimeter of your rug, and cut the rug gripping tape to match. Outline the border of the rug with the tape to prevent it from slipping.
