How to Put in an Area Rug with Furniture in the Room

You've bought a beautiful new area rug, but you have one problem---the room you want to put the rug in is filled with furniture. How do you put your new area rug down without having to move all of the furniture out of the room? The complexity of this exercise will vary based on the size of the rug you've purchased, but even if you've bought a rug that is 8 by 10 feet or larger, it can be done.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a friend to help you put down the rug. This friend will help you determine if the rug is straight and will assist in rolling out the rug and lifting up the edges of furniture.

    • 2

Decide where you want your rug to go. Measure from where the edge of the rug will be to the wall. Write down exactly how many feet and inches this is for both the width and the length of the rug.

    • 3

Move all furniture sitting directly on top of where the rug will go out of the room, or into a corner of the room out of the way.

    • 4

Carry the area rug into the room and set it down where you want it to go. Place the rug in the direction that you will be unrolling it. Place the unfurled edge of it at the distance from the wall that you measured for width.

    • 5

Unroll the rug. As you go, measure the distance from the rug to the wall every two feet to make certain it is centered. Lift up the edges of any furniture you encounter as you roll out the rug and place the rug underneath.

    • 6

Smooth out the rug. This may entail lifting the edges of the furniture again to make sure the rug is positioned perfectly. Check to make sure that the rug is not bunched up underneath the furniture.

    • 7

Vacuum your new area rug to get rid of any dirt from the store and replace the furniture that you moved from the area where you positioned the rug. Be sure to carry the furniture, as dragging it can cause the rug to get bunched up.
