How to Hang Primitive Hooked Rugs

Primitive hooked rugs add so much texture to a room. Rugs are made for the floor, table tops and walls. Regardless of the area for which your rug was originally intended, you can hang your hooked rug on the wall to preserve its beauty and make it a visual focal point of your room. Hanging a primitive hooked rug must be done with care to ensure the threads do not unravel and to prevent tearing of the backing fabric.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hooked Rug

    • 1

Measure the width and length of your hooked rug.

    • 2

Cut four muslin strips. Two of the strips will be as long as the rug is wide. Two strips will be the same length as the length of the rug. All four will be 2 inches wide.

    • 3

Fold each strip in half to make a strip about 1 inch wide. Press.

    • 4

Sew each muslin strip to the edges of the primitive hooked rug on the back. Sew close to the raw edges of the bottom strip. This forms a casing. The raw edges of the strips will point toward the inside of the rug. Use your hand needle and thread to sew a straight stitch. Do not allow your stitches to penetrate to the front of the rug.

    • 5

Insert a 1/2- inch wooden dowel in the bottom muslin casing. The other muslin pieces will help the rug keep its shape over the years as it hangs.

    Insert in Hanger

    • 6

Place the rug hanger backboard on a flat surface with the top side up. Place the top edge of the rug onto the backboard. Be certain the hooked rug edge is level but does not overlap the holes of the backboard.

    • 7

Place the top board cover the rug. Line the holes up with the backboard.

    • 8

Insert wooden knobs that come on the rug hanger into the holes and turn the knobs until they rug is secure. This will press the rug to hold it in place. The screws should never penetrate the rug.

    Hang the Hooked Rug

    • 9

Measure the distance of the keyhole slots on the back of the rug hanger.

    • 10

Mark one dot on the wall where you choose to hang the rug. Begin at this mark and measure the distance equal to the width between your keyholes. Mark a second dot at this location.

    • 11

Place a screw at each mark using a drill. Follow the directions that came with the rug hanger to determine the size of screw to use.

    • 12

Insert the keyholes onto the screws to hang the rug.
