How to Fringe a Miniature Rug

Miniature rugs are the delight of little girls and boys who love to play with doll houses and models. The miniature rug can be hand made of needlework or it can be a scrap piece of upholstery fabric that looks like a rug. Often the ends of these fragments are sealed and fringe is added to make the rug look more real. Creating fringe is an easy project and older children can be shown how to fringe new rugs for themselves.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a bead of anti-fray glue around the outer edges of your fabric scrap. Allow the glue to harden completely (see the manufacturer's suggestions included with your product for drying times).

    • 2

Select several colors of embroidery floss that pick up the primary colors in your fabric scrap. Jumbo bags are often sold at discount with dozens of colors in them.

    • 3

Cut 2 feet of each floss color that you will be using.

    • 4

Divide the floss thread in half. Select three strands in one hand and three strands in the other hand. Allow the floss to gently unwind.

    • 5

Thread three strands of floss using a needle threader onto an embroidery needle.

    • 6

Press the needle through the fabric from the back side to the front at 1/8-inch from the edge of the fabric. Pull the thread until 1-inch remains. Press the needle back through the fabric from the front side (use the same hole). Pull the thread until a 1/2-inch loop remains.

    • 7

Cut the thread (that is attached to the needle) even with the existing thread end. Put the needle aside.

    • 8

Gather the thread ends with your fingers and slide the ends through the loop. Once the threads are through the loop, pull the loop snug to the fabric. Repeat this all around the miniature rug and then finish by trimming the fringe to the length that looks best.
