How to Pick a Rug Pad

Although generally unseen, rug pads play an important role in the safety and appearance of your area rugs. A good rug pad will keep your area rug securely in place so it doesn't shift and buckle under people's feet or vacuum cleaners. It also provides a level of protection to the rug by preventing it from rubbing against hard surfaces such as wood or concrete.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and the length of your area rug, and deduct two inches from each measurement to determine which size rug pad you'll need to purchase. The rug pad should be slightly smaller than your area rug, not including the fringe.

    • 2

Choose the right type of rug pad for the location of your area rugs. When placing rugs over carpeting, look for a rug pad made from thin polyester with an adhesive backing. Area rugs placed over hard surfaces such as wood floors or cement require a thicker rug pad with a non-slip backing to provide cushioning, reduce wear and to keep the area rug in place.

    • 3

Position the rug pad on the floor in the precise location of your area rug. Carefully place the area rug on top of the rug pad, making sure that the pad stays in position and doesn't bunch. Once positioned correctly, the rug pad should not be visible.
