How to Use Rubber Pads With Area Rugs on Wood Floors

Measure the length and the width of the area rug carefully so you know what size rubber pad you'll need to purchase for underneath your area rug. If there is fringe on your area rug, don't include it in the measurement.

Shop for a rubber pad to be placed underneath your area rug. Some rug pads have an adhesive backing which can be applied directly to the floor. This is unnecessary for rugs placed on hardwood floors and could damage the underlying wood. If you have small children or pets, look for a rug pad that has a moisture barrier to protect against spills or urination. This barrier will ensure that the spill doesn't come into contact with your hardwood floor. It also extends the life of your rug pad by keeping fluids from being absorbed into the rug pad and causing odors.

Make sure the rug pad has a slip-free surface that will grip the hardwood floor and keep the area rug from crinkling and shifting. Look for a rubber pad that is well-made and designed to hold rugs securely in place.

Purchase a rubber pad that is slightly smaller than the area rug. A rug pad that is a half inch shorter in length and width will prevent the rug pad from showing when it is underneath the area rug. If necessary, the rug pad can be trimmed with a pair of sharp scissors once it is in place.
