How to Prevent Rugs From Sliding

Rugs are a great way to add a decorative touch to your interior design by providing warmth and protection from hardwood floors, tile and carpet. Many people struggle with keeping their rugs in the same spot. Traffic in a room can cause the rug to slide and shift, which not only can cause damage to the ends or the rug but can be hazardous to your family and visitors. Fortunately, there are some practical and easy ways to prevent your rugs from sliding.

Instructions

  1. Rug Pad

    • 1

Measure your area rug and record the length and width. Know this information to purchase your rug pad.

    • 2

Purchase a non-slip rug pad at least 3 inches smaller than the dimensions of your rug, length- and width-wise. If you purchase a rug pad of the same size, the pad may become noticeable and can take away from the design of the rug. The only downside of non-slip rug pads is that they are fairly expensive. The bigger your rug, the more expensive the pad.

    • 3

Clean the floor where your rug will be placed. It's important to have a clean surface so that the rug pad will adhere to the floor.

    • 4

Place the rug pad on the floor and smooth it out. Put extra pressure on the corners of the pad so it will adhere to the floor.

    • 5

Lay your rug on the carpet pad and adjust it so that the perimeter of the carpet has 3 inches of empty space. Center your carpet pad under your rug for optimal results.

    Double-Sided Tape

    • 6

Flip your rug over and apply three strips of double-sided tape at each corner of your rug. Place one strip at a 45-degree angle on each corner and one strip to the left and right side. These will serve as the anchors for the corners of the rug. Do not pull off the plastic covering the adhesive yet.

    • 7

Place more double-sided tape around the perimeter of the rug, laying a strip every 2 to 4 inches, depending on the size of your rug. Move to the center of the rug and place multiple pieces of double-side tape to create a small square in the middle. This will help anchor the center of your rug.

    • 8

Remove all the plastic on the double-sided adhesive that will stick to the floor. It's important that you wait to do this until all of the double-sided tape has been placed on your rug to get optimal results.

    • 9

Grab the rug by each corner with the help of a friend or family member, flip it over and place it on the floor. Having help will prevent your form folding the rug and tape from accidentally adhering to other sections on the rug. Apply pressure to the perimeter and center of the rug to assure that the double-sided tape adheres to your surface.
