How to Make Pieced Carpet Remnants Rugs

It is possible and fairly simple to design your own rugs from carpet remnants or carpet samples, both of which can be found at carpeting stores for much less money than premade rugs. With a few easy-to-find materials, you can design a rug that is as basic or creative as you can wish in any color or design you choose.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your carpet pieces out in several patterns to play around with color, design and shape. Experiment until you arrive at a desired arrangement.

    • 2

Use the marker to draw any shapes you might want for your rug on the back of the carpet pieces. Circles, leaf shapes and others can all be incorporated into your final design.

    • 3

Cut the shapes out of the carpet pieces with the carpet scissors. Use the scissors to remove any edging from carpet samples as well.

    • 4

Piece your final design into place on the floor.

    • 5

Flip each piece over, while keeping your rug together in the right configuration.

    • 6

Push pieces tightly together and apply either carpet glue or carpet tape to each of the seams, according to the packaging directions.

    • 7

Attach to the back of your rug to muslin or canvas for a more finished look if you desire.

    • 8

Apply hot glue in sections around the finished rug edge and adhere the decorative edging.

    • 9

Allow the carpet glue to cure for 48 hours before allowing foot traffic.
