What Type of Padding Should I Use Under an Area Rug on a Hardwood Floor?

Rug pads are useful in preventing area rugs from sliding and bunching when you walk on them. Rug pads also help protect rugs from mildew by allowing air to flow underneath to help maintain dryness. Area rugs that have a rug pad underneath are easy to vacuum and do not develop furniture indentations as quickly.
  1. Sponge Rubber Padding

    • There are two types of sponge rubber padding used under area rugs, flat rubber and waffle rubber. Flat rubber is best for rugs in high traffic areas in your home. These pads prevent furniture indentations and can be used with both light and heavy area rugs. Waffle rubber pads are thinner than flat rubber pads and do not offer as much support, especially to rugs with heavy plastic backing. Rubber padding should not used on polyurethane-coated hardwood floors as the pads can cause dimpling to the flooring that is very expensive to repair.

    Polyurethane Padding

    • Rebond padding is a type of polyurethane padding made from recycled foam pieces. This padding provides excellent cushion and insulation for hardwood flooring. Rebond can be cut to fit the size of your area rug and is found in most carpet stores or online. Other types of polyurethane padding include prime and froth padding. Prime padding material is commonly found in chairs, sofas and mattresses. Rebond and prime padding can be used on all types of hardwood flooring and finishes. Froth padding is applied directly to the back of a rug to create non-slip surface; however, froth padding may cause discoloration to flooring and additional pads may be necessary to protect the flooring. Consult the carpet manufacturer to determine the best course of action.

    Felted Fiber Padding

    • There are two types of felted fiber padding, synthetic and natural. Synthetic felted fiber padding is made from polyester, nylon, polypropylene and other man-made materials. These materials are processed to create flat sheets of felt. This padding is strong and can be used under both light and heavy area rugs. Natural fiber padding is made from animal hair and plants. These fibers are also processed to create flat sheets of felt. Natural fibers are safe to use on any hardwood surface and are very durable. Leftover pieces of felt are commonly recycled and used to create felted fiber padding as well.
