Why Do Rugs Curl?

Curling is when edges of an area rug lift off the floor. This can be prevented by using a rug pad, tape or even reverse rolling the rug to train the edges to stay down.
  1. Facts

    • Changing humidity or temperature, as well as storing a rug rolled up, can cause the edges of a rug to curl. The type of weave or edge binding may also contribute to this problem.

    Location

    • Curling occurs at the edges or the corners of an area rug. Sometimes only one side or corner presents a problem.

    Prevention / Solution

    • Using a rug pad or taping down the edges of the rug will help prevent the edges from curling.

    Tip

    • Before laying down your rug for the first time, reverse roll it and let it sit that way for a few days. This will train the edges to curl down towards the floor and not up away from the floor.

    Warning

    • Curling edges on a rug provide a tripping hazard and should be remedied as quickly as possible.

    Expert Insight

    • Re-sewing or rebinding the edges of your rug may be done if the above methods fail to remedy the curling edges.
