How to Add Velcro to Rugs

Adding Velcro to rugs can help them stay in place or allow you to hang a wall decoration. Rugs become a hazard when they slide around the floor or get caught under doors. Rug padding offers some stability; however, it often time slips as much as the rug. For rugs too beautiful to step on, you can attach Velcro and hang it as a decorative focal point in your house. Decide which rugs you want to keep on the ground and which ones you want to use as part of the decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area on the floor or on the wall that you want to attach your rug. Write down your measurements, so you know how much Velcro to purchase. Hold up your rug to feel its weight. If you have a smaller rug, you can fold it up and place it on a bathroom scale.

    • 2

Buy enough canvas fabric to cover the back of your rug. Make sure that it is 1-inch wider and longer than your rug. This piece of strong fabric will allow you to place the Velcro on the fabric and not on the actual rug to prevent damaging rugs.

Hem the canvas to fit the back of your rug. Pin the canvas to the rug and hand sew with a needle and thread. Use a oversewing stitch to prevent the canvas from unraveling or fraying at the ends.

    • 4

Use a strong piece of Velcro at least 1 1/2 inches wide. Pin the Velcro onto the perimeter of the rug and sew using a backstitch stitch. The backstitch is the one of the strongest stitches you can use when hand sewing.

Measure on your wall or floor where you will attach your Velcro. Paint a glue adhesive on the back that is safe for your flooring when attaching to the ground. Staple the velcro to the wall when hanging your decorative rug.
