The Best Rug Pads for a Carpet

Many buyers may not know that the type of carpet padding used is just as important as the carpet itself. Carpet padding is credited with extending the life of the carpet and reducing wear and tear on the carpet. Important facts to consider when deciding on which pad to purchase are the density of the pad and available treatments.
  1. Rebond

    • Rebond is known for being the most-used carpet padding in homes and commercial buildings. Rebond padding is the only padding made of small strips of foam particles and fibers. The combination of fibers allows the material to be long-lasting and comfortable. This padding dulls sound while extending the life of your carpet. Rebond comes in various thicknesses and densities which provide a soft feeling underfoot.

    Slab Rubber

    • The best form of slab rubber is 100-oz. 19-lb. density. This density of slab rubber padding provides luxury and extended wear. Slab rubber is favored over other rubber padding because it does not contain large ripples of air.

    Frothed Foam

    • Frothed foam is the highest-quality carpet padding available. Made at 7/16 inch thick, this padding is extra dense. It is constructed with micro cells which act as tiny shock absorbers. This construction is what gives the padding its pliancy and support. Frothed foam receives its high rating because it outperforms other carpet padding by reducing furniture indentation in carpet, can be used with any type of carpet, and is better at extending the life of the carpet than rebond, fiber, or waffle rubber padding. The cost is comparable to a high-quality slab rubber, and frothed foam also has a longer life span. Frothed foam can also be treated to resist bacteria growth and installed in a way that it provides a moisture barrier to guard against spills soaking into the subfloor. Additionally, frothed foam is environmentally friendly because it has nearly no VOC’s, including styrene and formaldehyde.
