How to Install Carpet Runners on Pergo

Pergo is a popular laminate flooring option that looks like wood but is easier and less expensive to install. A carpet runner can be used to protect the floor in high-traffic areas such as hallways; it can also prevent slips, while eliminating echoes. Unlike hardwood floors, Pergo flooring does not tolerate tack strips well; the boards are prone to cracking when penetrated by nails, and if you decide to pull up the carpet runner in the future, it's hard to disguise the marks left by carpet tacks and tack strips. So when installing a carpet runner, it's best to use adhesive strips, which will not puncture or damage the Pergo flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove furniture from the area where the carpet runner will be installed and sweep the floor to remove dust, pet hair and debris.

    • 2

Mix equal amounts of vinegar and water and use the solution to mop the floor. The floor must be completely clean prior to installation, so the carpet tape can adhere properly.

    • 3

Use lint-free rags to dry the floor, particularly in the area where the runner will be placed.

    • 4

Measure the floor and the width of the carpet runner. Subtract the carpet runner width from the width of the floor. Then, divide the sum by two to determine how much space should be between the edge of the carpet and the wall on each side.

    • 5

Cut strips of double-sided carpet tape to the appropriate length (they will sit around the perimeter of the runner's underside), remove the wax paper from one side of the tape and apply it to the perimeter of the runner's underside. Run your hand over the tape to ensure that it sticks well.

    • 6

Put the carpet runner on the floor where it will be located. Then, fold it in half lengthwise, so that half the underside is facing up.

    • 7

Remove the wax-paper backing on the tape from the portion of the underside that's facing up. Begin at the runner's center and slowly unfold the runner. Remove the tape as you go, pressing the runner onto the floor as you unfold it. Run your hands over the perimeter of the runner to ensure it adheres to the floor.

    • 8

Fold the other half of the runner onto the half that's now stuck to the floor and repeat Step 7.
