How to Get Tape Residue Out of Carpet

Tape residue on any kind of fiber is very difficult to remove, particularly when you are trying to remove it from carpet. Scraping or pulling at it will only damage the carpet fibers or pull them out entirely, but wetting it and blotting it doesn’t always do the trick. Fortunately, there are several products on the market that are designed for removing sticky residue. With one of these products and a few other basic household goods it is easy to remove tape residue without doing damage to your carpet.

Things You'll Need

  • Residue remover like Goo Gone or De-Solve-It
  • Soft cloths
  • Mild dishwashing liquid
  • Water
  • Basin
  • Rubber gloves
  • Vacuum

Instructions

      Put on your rubber gloves and apply a small amount of residue cleaner to a soft cloth.

      Blot the cloth along the area with the tape residue. Press it firmly into the carpet to loosen as much of the residue as possible.

      Continue to apply the cleansing agent to clean areas of the cloth and work it into the carpet until most of the residue has been dissolved.

      Moisten another clean, soft cloth with water and wipe the area that you have just cleaned with the residue remover.

      Apply a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid to the damp cloth and use it to blot the carpet fibers.

      Dip the cloth into clean, clear water, wring it out and go over the treated area once again with the cloth, making sure that all of the residue, residue remover and soap are gone.

      Allow the carpet to dry thoroughly

      Vacuum the carpet to remove any loose fibers or bits of loosened tape residue.
