Examine the condition of the hide. If you are dealing with a reputable taxidermist, there should be no signs of rotting, weakness of the hide, shedding or other telltale indications of deterioration.

Compare prices between vendors. Bearskin rugs are expensive and start at $1500 and up. They can vary greatly in price depending upon the length of the rug, the quality of the fur, and supply and demand at the time you buy it. However, get a sense of what other sellers are charging to make sure you're not overpaying.

Double-check the room that you plan on putting the rug in. Will something so exotic and masculine match your decor and color scheme?

Look into possibly buying a fake bearskin rug. They cost a fraction of the price (starting at $200), and in some ways they're a safer investment. Even though they won't last forever, the way a real one will, it will be less of a disappointment if you become tired of it and want to get rid of it.
