How to Make Tapestry Rugs

Many home decorators use Oriental rugs as wall hangings. They turn an ordinary rug into a tapestry. These wall hangings can be made from any rug and are a way to add a decorative touch to a room. It may look difficult, but turning a rug into a tapestry requires a few basic tools and a little know-how. A rod with hangers and a bit of fabric can turn a plain rug into a tapestry rug.

Instructions

Find a rod and hangers on which the tapestry rug will hang. Attach the hangers using the screws that came with them to the wall where the rug will hang. Make sure that the rod will fit the hangers with enough room to hang the rug in between them. The rod should be long enough to cover the width of the rug and stick out 2 inches on either side of the rug. The extra 2 inches on either side is where the rod will attach to the hangers. The heavier the rug, the thicker or stronger the rod and hangers should be.

Sew a sleeve along the top back side of the rug that is to be the tapestry. The sleeve must be wide enough to thread the rod all the way through. You may choose to do several short sleeves with the rod showing in between them or one long sleeve that travels the whole width of the rug. Make sure that the sleeve is sewn parallel to the top edge so that the rug will hang straight. If the rug is quite heavy, it may be necessary to double-sew the edges of the sleeve to ensure that the edges do not come loose.

Push the rod through the sleeve until it is sticking out evenly on both sides of the rug about 2 inches. Attach the rod on either side of the rug to the hangers, creating a tapestry rug.
