How to Hold Down Carpet Runners

Long, narrow area rugs used in spaces like hallways and galley kitchens are called carpet runners, which add color and texture to a room as well as comfort. Because hallways and kitchens are typically high-traffic areas, choose a carpet runner that’s easy to clean and can withstand heavy use, like one made of synthetic fibers. Make sure your carpet runner is securely in place by using a carpet pad underneath.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the area where the carpet runner will lay, whether the area is carpeted or hard flooring like wood, tile or vinyl.

    • 2

Mop the area using the appropriate cleaner and allow to dry completely.

    • 3

Choose a nonskid carpet pad made for your floor type by reading the manufacturer’s information on the packaging. Some nonskid pads work on all floor types.

    • 4

Use scissors (and ruler, if needed) to cut your nonskid carpet pad to fit your carpet runner: 1 to 2 inches smaller than the runner on all four sides.

    • 5

Lay the nonskid pad on the carpeted or hard floor where you wish to place the carpet runner.

    • 6

Lay the carpet runner squarely on top of the pad.
