How to Stop an Area Rug From Bunching on the Carpet

A bunched area rug on carpet can be a tripping hazard, not to mention it isn't aesthetically pleasing. Several different methods can be used to address the problem, depending on the pile, or thickness, of the carpet. The weight of the area rug itself also will determine its tendency to bunch--the heavier the rug, the less likely it is to bunch.

Instructions

  1. For Low-Pile Carpet--Less Than 1/2-inch Thick

    • 1
Berber is an example of low-pile carpet.

Use scissors to cut strips of double-sided tape the length of the area rug. Place several strips on the back side of the rug.

    • 2

Decide where you want the area rug to go and remove the paper strips from the double-sided tape.

    • 3

Place rug, tape-side down, on the carpet and press down firmly to get good adhesion between the rug and the carpet.

    For Thick-Pile Carpet--Greater Than 1/2-inch Thick

    • 4
Shag is an example of thick-pile carpet.

Purchase a non-skid rug pad (made to be used on top of carpet) at a home improvement or retail store.

    • 5

Measure the rug with tape measure and use scissors to cut the rug pad a few inches smaller than the dimensions of your rug.

    • 6

Use double-sided tape to attach the non-skid pad to the back of your area rug.

    • 7

Place the rug with pad attached on top of your carpet.
