Measure the area to be carpeted and purchase enough seagrass carpeting to complete the project. Be sure all the mats (sections) are roughly the same color since this can vary. Choose a pattern that has natural breaks in it, such as the square pictured above, to make cutting various sections easier.
Make a template (as an alternative) by rolling out enough strips of paper to approximate the area to be carpeted. Tape the strips together for ease of handling. Measure the area and transfer these measurements to the paper. Use the yardstick to connect the points drawing straight lines with the marker. Mark the side of the template facing up "TOP." Using the scissors, cut out the template.
Roll the seagrass out on a clean, flat surface, right side down. If you are carpeting a large area and need to combine multiple seagrass mats, sew the edges together using a curved upholstery needle and twine the same color as the seagrass. Knot it securely. Be sure the sections lie completely flat when joined. Take care to restitch them, should you cut through your sewing when cutting out the template.
Place the template on the seagrass with the side marked "TOP" facing down. Position it so the least amount of cuts need to be made; use the natural edge for one of the longest straight sides. Trace around the template with the marker. If you are within 1/4 to 1/2 inch of a natural break in the design (edge of a square), make your cut at the edge rather than in the middle of the design.
Cut out the carpet along the line you have drawn. Gently shake out any excess seagrass flakes or dust and position the carpeting, face up, in the room.
