Carpet tiles are a combination of polypropylene and polyester material, which makes them waterproof, odor-proof, stain resistant and easy to clean while also soft and comfortable. They are interlocking and easy to install because they need no adhesive. They are designed for long-lasting durability in high-traffic areas. They are a good choice for the basement play room or recreation room.
Polypropylene, or olefin, carpet resists stains, fading, abrasion and moisture. It has a level-loop construction for easy vacuuming. Tested by Consumer Reports, this material was found to be better than polyester as it wears longer and stands up to tougher traffic. Polypropylene is a bulked continuous filament fiber (BCF) and does not shed loose filaments following carpet installation. It is a good choice for basements due to its resistance to moisture, mildew, water damage, staining, pilling, shedding and static.
Nylon is the strongest and most durable of the synthetic carpets but the most expensive. It is resistant to mold and mildew but prone to static, although it can be given an anti-static treatment to reduce static build-up. Nylon carpet is resilient, stain resistant and hides soil well, so it is also a good choice for basement carpet.
