How to Cut Toilet Space From a Bathroom Rug

You've decided to lay carpet in your bathroom, and it's a reasonable floor covering option, as long as you purchase a good quality carpet that is water- and mildew-resistant. Carpet provides a soft, warm surface that tile and hardwood floors lack. The challenge for do-it-yourself carpet layers is how to fit the carpet snuggly around the perimeter of the toilet. Here are a couple options for cutting the carpet accurately.

Things You'll Need

  • 18- to 20-gauge hanger wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Newspaper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • 8 ½ by 11-inch scrap paper
  • Masking tape

Instructions

  1. Hanger Wire Method

    • 1

Cut three feet of wire off of the wire roll and straighten it. Bend the wire on the floor around one half of the toilet, beginning at the middle of the back and ending at the middle of the front. Cut off any excess wire, using wire cutters.

    • 2

Spread open one full sheet of newspaper on a table. Set the bent wire on the paper, with the cut ends of the wire touching the middle fold of the newspaper. Trace the half-toilet shape onto the newspaper with a pencil, following the curvature of the wire.

    • 3

Flip the wire over to the opposite side of the centerfold and lay it with the cut ends of the wire touching the middle fold of the newspaper. Trace the toilet shape onto that half of the newspaper. Cut out the center piece of newspaper and use it as a pattern for cutting a hole in your carpet.

    Scrap Paper Method

    • 4

Lay out pieces of scrap paper on the floor around the edge of the toilet, overlapping each sheet by two-to-four inches. Tape all pieces securely together with masking tape.

    • 5

Cut a slit in the taped scrap paper at the back of the toilet, to allow you to slide the papers out as one unit.

    • 6

Spread one full sheet of newspaper open on a table. Place the taped scrap paper on top of the newspaper. Draw the toilet-shape on the newspaper, rounding the angular corners formed by the taped scrap paper. Cut out the center piece of newspaper and use it as a pattern for cutting a hole in the carpet.
