How to Hang a Persian Rug on a Wall

Because of the beauty of their intricate and symmetrical designs, Persian rugs are often displayed on walls. A Persian rug that hangs on a wall will also undergo less wear and tear than one that's on the floor. Because Persian rugs tend to be heavy, they must be hung securely and with care to preserve their fibers and value.

Instructions

  1. Cloth Sleeves

    • 1

Mount a wood or metal bar along the wall, making sure it is not mounted at an angle. Check that the bar is mounted high enough so the rug won't touch the floor.

    • 2

Sew at least several cloth sleeves right below the top on the backside of the Persian rug. Place the sleeves evenly to distribute the weight. Sew sleeves on each corner and in the middle.

    • 3

Paint the wooden bar to prevent acid deterioration into the rug, and paint or varnish metal bars to prevent rust from getting on the rug. Mount your Persian rug by placing the sleeves around the bar.

    Wooden Frame

    • 4

Cut a wooden frame (or piece of plywood) the same size as the rug. Place the frame high enough so the rug won't reach the floor, and mount it on the wall.

    • 5

Stretch out your Persian rug on the frame so it is centered. Make sure it is pulled tight, and flatten out all creases.

    • 6

Attach the rug to the frame with heavy-duty tacks or staples, using tacks that are the same color as the rug. Be aware staples might be visible, and it's not a good idea to hang a Persian rug for an extended period of time with staples, as its fibers will be strained by the rug's weight.

    Velcro

    • 7

Sew 2-inch velcro onto the back of the rug, with the soft part on the rug and the firmer part facing the wall. Sew two large strips down the middle and pieces on all four sides.

    • 8

Attach the firm part of the velcro to a wooden board with staples. You can also attach the velcro with glue. Make sure the velcro is attached to the board in a straight line.

    • 9

Attach the rug to the wooden board, making sure it is centered. A big advantage of using velcro is you can easily adjust the rug after pulling it off the board.
