How to Create an Area Rug From Vinyl Flooring Scraps

Vinyl flooring is resilient, flexible and durable, which makes it the perfect background for a do-it-yourself area rug. Place vinyl area rugs under kitchen tables, in playrooms or as runners in back entryways or mudrooms. Add a decorative pattern to the vinyl and place the rugs in kitchens, laundry rooms or work areas for a comfortable alternative to bare, cold floors. Vinyl cuts easily and can be used in large or small rug sizes, depending upon the size of the scrap material.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the size of the vinyl rug by determining where the rug will be used and the size of the vinyl flooring scraps available.

    • 2

Cut the vinyl flooring with scissors or a mat knife to the appropriate overall size of the rug.

    • 3

Place a dropcloth over your work area and the vinyl rug on the dropcloth to protect the area.

    • 4

Prepare the vinyl rug to receive paint by removing the glossy finish with 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe away the grit and dust from the sanded vinyl with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Apply a liquid deglosser and allow it to dry. This will improve paint bonding.

    • 6

Roll or spray a primer on to the rug surface and allow to dry.

    • 7

Apply paint to the primed surface. Use painter's tape and a straight-edge ruler to mask the flooring and create a pattern.
