How to Hang a Rug with Velcro® on Drywall

Hand-woven rugs and carpets are no less works of art than the painting over your fireplace mantle. Rugs look stunning on the walls as textile art. But you must hang them correctly, or you'll damage your rug and your drywall. You have to distribute the weight of the rug to keep it from tearing or warping and let the studs bear the weight for the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the hanging length and width of your rug, and mark the placement on your wall with a pencil. Draw a penciled line, representing the top edge of the rug, 1-inch below the height marks. Use a yardstick to get a straight line, and check it with a level.

    • 2

Buy a trim board, furring strip or any long, thin board at least two inches wide that doesn't project more than one-half inch from the wall. Cut the board one inch shorter than your rug width.

    • 3

Cut heavy-duty, two-inch, sew-on Velcro® into a strip one inch shorter than your rug width.

    • 4

Staple the wiry half of the Velcro® to your board. Use lots of staples. It won't hurt the Velcro®, and it helps the rug hang securely.

    • 5

Locate the wall studs along your penciled line. Screw the board into the wall at the studs, using a drill and screw bits. Use a level to make sure the board is hanging straight.

    • 6

Cut three-inch cotton webbing (the type used for upholstery projects) into a strip one inch shorter than your rug width. Center the fuzzy half of the Velcro® strip on the cotton webbing, leaving one-half inch at the top and bottom. Pin it into place. Use a sewing machine to stitch the Velcro® to the cotton webbing.

    • 7

Hand-sew the cotton webbing across the top of your rug, one-half inch below the top edge. To keep your rug from stretching, start at the center and stitch outward to each edge. Leave one-half inch of rug space free on each end. Use a heavy-duty needle and heavy cotton thread, and sew with a backstitch.

Hold the rug up to the wall, and press the two halves of Velcro® together. Press firmly, from one end of the strip to the other.
