How to Make Rugs With Carpet Squares

Choose a non-slip rug pad in your desired size. These are typically made of a thin mesh material that will hold the carpet squares in place without sliding across your floor. They can be easily cut to your preferred shape or sized with ordinary scissors.

Consider combining colors, textures and square shapes to create your own look. You can use an ordinary razor blade to cut out more intricate shapes. Simply trace your shape on the underside of the square with a marker and cut along your trace lines.

Arrange the carpet squares over your rug pad as desired. Once you've settled on your rug design, remove your carpet squares piece by piece and lay them upside down in your desired pattern.

Position the fabric hook and loop fasteners along your rug pad, as well as on the underside of your fabric squares. These can be glued on using a hot glue gun. Some fastener brands even have a removable adhesive backing to simplify the process.

Place the carpet squares on your rug pad one at a time. Press firmly to properly attach the fabric hook and loop fasteners, to increase the rug's durability.

Spot-clean as needed by removing your carpet pieces from the rug pad and wiping them clean with a damp cloth. The squares also can be easily replaced by cutting out new squares.

Consider finishing the edges with a 2-inch piece of ribbon. Simply hot glue or sew your ribbon along the edge of the rug. Fold the ribbon in half, so 1 inch of material is on either side of your rug, then sew or glue it in place.
