How to Paint Sisal Rugs

Sisal rugs are durable, but not always attractive or interesting--at least, not until they are painted. Painting a sisal rug is a fun project that can be done over a weekend. Not only will they add color to a room, but they can help you add a personal touch to any location. Best of all, they can be used indoors and outdoors.

Things You'll Need

  • Painter's tape
  • Freezer paper (optional)
  • Ruler
  • Stencil brush
  • Latex paint
  • Polyurethane sealer

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your work area with newspaper. You will need a location large enough to spread the rug flat. It should be in a location where the rug can remain for a couple of days to dry. Make sure your sisal rug has not been sealed and is clean and dry.

    • 2

Cover any areas you don't want painted with tape. If using a stencil brush, all you need to do is cover the edges of the area. However, if you plan on using spray paint, cover the area with butcher paper (taped down with painter's tape) to protect it.

    • 3

Apply the paint to the rug with a stencil brush. Use plenty of paint, but don't make it too thick, or it may break off later. Use a high-quality exterior latex paint that is self-sealing and scuff-resistant--even if you plan on keeping the rug indoors.

    • 4

Remove the tape immediately after you finish painting. Allow the rug to dry for at least 24 hours.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for each color paint you want to use on the rug.

    • 6

Spray the entire rug with a polyurethane sealer, or brush on the sealer. This step is optional if the rug will not be located in a high-traffic area. Let the rug cure for three to four days before using.
