Vacuum your carpet two to three times a week to remove dirt and fuzz build up. Use a vacuum with strong suction and a rotating beater bar set to a height that will agitate the carpet gently. If the beater bar is too close to the carpet, it can damage the carpet fibers and cause "pills" which are tangled tufts and fibers.
Inspect the carpet for pills. Cut any pills off with scissors.
Place an absorbent pad or towel under your carpet after vacuuming. Spray a layer of dry foam cleaner on your carpet. Allow the foam to dry. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Remove the pad or towel from under the carpet when the carpet is completely dry.
Remove liquid spills on your carpet by blotting, not scrubbing, with a towel. Clean any stains with a rug shampoo or mild liquid soap. Rinse the soap and blot any remaining water.
Contact a professional carpet cleaner about steam cleaning your carpet. Avoid renting a steam cleaner because home steam cleaners often use detergents that will damage or leave residue on your carpet.
