What Is Cut & Loop Carpet?

Cut and loop carpet, often called sculptured carpet, can give your room character and personality that sheared or loop carpet cannot provide. The varying heights of the carpet fiber add drama and depth to ordinary carpet, bringing your floors to life. Cut and loop carpet first found popularity in the 1970s, but it remains a favorite in the twenty-first century.
  1. How It Is Made

    • The texture of cut and loop carpet varies with the height of the loops

Cut and loop carpet is made by combining a high cut pile and low loop pile carpet to make a design or random pattern. The low loop in cut and loop carpet is used to help keep the pattern in the carpet from matting while also keeping its shape and design.

    Patterns

    • Cut and loop carpet can come in an infinite number of patterns, from simple straight lines to geometric shapes, floral designs or one-of-a-kind creations. The options are limited only by the manufacturers' imaginations.

    Colors

    • Monochromatic--one color--cut and loop carpet is dramatic, with the loops defining the pattern.
Multicolor cut and loop carpet is most often designed with specific patterns in mind. Florals, geometrics and mass produced one of-a-kind designs are the most readily available types of multicolor cut and loop carpet.

    Fabric Choices

    • As with all other types of carpet, cut and loop carpet comes in a variety of fabrics: wool, nylon, cotton, flax or cotton and acrylic. The fabric you choose for your cut and loop carpet will depend upon factors such as where it is to be installed, the amount of traffic in that area and your personal preferences. Your decision will determine how often your carpet will need to be cleaned and how it will stand up over time.

    Maintenance

    • Cut and loop carpet is best in informal areas. By its very nature, the varying levels of fiber help hide dirt, especially if your cut and loop carpet is multicolored. The process for vacuuming and shampooing your cut and loop carpet is identical to the method employed for cleaning any other carpet or rug of the same fiber composition.
