Place the tab on a measuring tape at the rear of the landing over the top step. Extend the tape measure across the landing and down onto the top step. Record the measurement on a piece of paper with a pencil.
Place the tab of the tape measure on the far right side of the landing and extend the tape measure to the left side of the landing. Record this measurement.
Measure the length of the hall on the landing by placing the tab of the tape measure on one end of the hall and extending it to the opposite end. Record this measurement.
Measure the width of the hall on the landing by placing the tab of the tape measure on the right side of the hall and extending it to the left side. Record this measurement.
Place the tab of the tape measure on the right side of the step. Extend the tape to the left side. Record this measurement as the width of the stairs.
Place the tab of the tape measure on the back of a step near the riser. Extend the tape measure down over the step and onto the back of the next step, near the riser. Record this measurement as the length of the stairs.
Count the number of steps in the staircase. Record the measurements of the stairs as the number of steps at width by length.
Place the tab of the tape measure on the right side of the hallway and extend the tape measure to the left side. Record the measurement as the width of the hallway.
Measure the length of the hallway. Place the tab of the tape measure at the rear of the hallway and extend it to the front of the hallway. Record the measurement.
Measure a hallway with a recess as a rectangle or square. Use the widest measurement for the width and the longest measurement as the length.
