Instructions

    • 1

Cut all fabric into 2 1/2-inch wide strips that are as long as possible. Roll the fabric strips into three equally sized balls.

    • 2

Gather one fabric strip end from each ball and fasten them to the arm of a sofa or upholstered chair with the safety pin to maintain stability during the braiding process.

    • 3

Braid the cotton fabric strips by moving the outer strips inward toward the center. Add new strips to the braid when needed. Use all the fabric strips to create a very long braid.

    • 4

Coil the braid, beginning at the center, on a table or on the floor. Spiral the braid around center coil to create the rug shape of your choice, round or oval.

    • 5

Sew the strips together, beginning in the center coil, by stitching through the braid on the top of the spiraled rug, making sure the rug remains in its shaped position during the sewing process. Sew the braid end to the top of the rug, which will become the rug bottom.
