How to Repair a Persian Rug

Persian rugs are modern reminders of the long history of the Middle East. Made throughout centuries as functional necessities of home flooring, these rugs evolved into interior design elements. Oftentimes, Persian rugs will begin to show wear and tear from spills and high levels of foot traffic. To minimize the damage, keep a carpet padding underneath rugs. You can also use them underneath furniture such as coffee tables to prevent stains or heavy use.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning and Reparing Stains

    • 1

Clean the Persian rug in order to better inspect the rug for any potential tears. Vacuum the Persian rug going toward and against the carpet fibers. Use a strong suction vacuum cleaner. Lift the rug and vacuum the back.

    • 2

Remove old stains by diluting clear mild vegetable shampoo carpet cleaner with cool water. Spray the stain with the water and dip a white rag into the cleaning solution. Blot at the stain with the rag. Avoid spreading the stain by rubbing.

    • 3

Rinse the soapy mixture with cool water and blot at the stain with a white towel until dry.

    Fixing Tears

    • 4

Lift the rug over and push the carpet fibers through the tear with a putty knife. Press both sides of the tear together.

    • 5

Place a piece of duct tape over the hole. For light-colored Persian carpets, use a white piece of duct tape. Darker carpeting should have black or a like colored piece of duct tape.

    • 6

Lift the carpeting back over and set on carpet padding.

    Frayed Edge of Rugs

    • 7

Choose a thread that is the same color as the background of the Persian rug. Strong threads such as wool or cotton are best for frayed edge repair.

    • 8

Thread a sewing needle and make a knot in the thread. Press the needle 1/4 of an inch away from the bottom of the Persian rug damage. Continue to make several backstitched into the frayed area.

    • 9

Sew diagonal stitched over the frayed edge by using an oversewing stitch. Avoid making the stitches too tight.

    • 10

Make a knot in the thread at the bottom of the Persian rug. Cut off any excess thread with scissors.
